Castle Varrach
An early evening walk for Caley to see Castle Varrach. A small information board at the bottom of the hill conveys some interesting facts, but even much of this data is based on interpretation by the historians.
"A varrach" and this is my pigeon gaelic means Lochaber man; Lochaber being the Fort William area of the West Highlands many many miles south of here but the name is thought to relate to one of the previous occupiers coming from Lochaber.
A road in my home village of Inverlochy in Fort William is called "Abrach"; surely a corruption of "A varrach"
Words ending in "Ach" relate to a person:
Am Bodach, the old man
A Calleach, the old woman.
Sassenach (Saxon Ach), English person.
