Settling In?
We’ve seen our Northern Flicker pair several times today, beginning quite early this morning. They clearly enjoy the avian menu offerings available on our deck and are more relaxed, as evident in today’s blip of Mr. NF admiring the view from the deck.
He also spent some time at the nesting box that Phil built, checking it out carefully, as anyone considering a new abode should do (extra photo). Ms. NF stopped by several times for meals as well, although not when I had my camera nearby.
I have a new respect for the amount of work that parent birds undertake to raise their families after watching this brief video from the Vermont Institute of Natural Science’s Nature Center. It shows an intern at the center single-handedly feeding ten orphaned Northern Flicker fledglings — don’t miss it, as I guarantee it will make you smile!
