Old school
Built in 1573 using materials from St.Peters church that had been demolished following an appeal by Elizabeth 1st. This was the first free school in Leicester
The Royal coat of arms is displayed on the far left of the wall.
Details of the school curriculum have survived. Pupils attended lessons 6 days a week with a half day on Thursday.
Summer hours were 5am-5pm with a 2 hour break and in winter it was 7-5.
Subjects included English, Latin and Greek and older boys were expected to speak Latin to each other. The school closed in 1841 and is now a steak restaurant called appropriately enough 1573....
