Sword Beach
We are at Ouistreham, near Caen, ready for the ferry back to the UK tomorrow. Normandie, one of the cross channel ferries, has just left port.
We took the Krays for a walk on Sword beach, the most easterly sector of the D-Day landings 72 years ago.
Admiral Donitz, head of the German navy (Kriegsmarine or 'war navy'), who was briefly head of state after Hitler's suicide, had correctly predicted to Hitler the Normandy beaches as the site of the allied landings. Hitler chose to believe other advisors and concentrated his defences further north, where the crossing from Britain was much narrower.
The extra is a poster we saw from the 70 year D-day commemorations of 2014
