Passing

I was on the Island of Bute campaigning today but on the way back I noticed this - one of the Highland Region Corran ferries (The Maid of Glencoul) on its way into the Ardmaleish boatyard for a refit passing a Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel tied up at Loch Striven either depositing, or receiving, fuel from the depot there which is well disguised on the hillside.

The web entry for the Loch Striven OFD says only this :

"The Loch Striven OFD site operates as a diesel and aviation fuel storage depot for the Royal Navy and NATO vessels. Loch Striven OFD was originally built in the 1960’s and is located on the south east shore of the loch.

Due to the volume of fuel stored at the site, OFD Loch Striven is an ‘upper tier’ site under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH)."

Given the number of vessels one sees there, it must be a major facility  and perhaps therefore something of a unrealised hazard for the local population.
