That's Life!

We Aren't Sailing!

Some things you really don't expect to find beside a highway. Such as a wrecked sailing ship (made of steel?). Well, that's what motorists see as they drive along the QEW just outside Lincoln, Ontario, the main road between Toronto and Niagara Falls.

This grounded ship, sails jutting high over over a hedge, was a replica of the Grand Hermie used by Jacques Cartier in 1535-1536 and 1541-1542 to explore Canada. The replica, built in 1967 for Expo 67 as part of Expo 67, became a casino/restaurant in Montreal before being towed to its current site, where it was to continue life as a floating restaurant. However, a fire ended those plans, now the wreck lies abandoned in the shallows of a marina . . .

Here are two more images of the wreck peering through the bushes (click here), and listing in its final resting place in the shallows of Lake Ontario (click here)
