Is It Clean Enough Now?
Cynthia and I went to the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation immediately after breakfast at Crema, arriving at 10:30 am. We were more than a liitle upset to find that it didn't open until 1:00, but I managed to talk our way inside.
I had a great time and C enjoyed it a lot more than she or I expected. Here she is admiring the massive driving wheels and connecting rods of locomotive 4449. She -- 4449, not C -- was built for Southern Pacific in 1941 and retired in 1956. In 1974 she was restored to pull the 1976 Bicentennial Freedom Train on its tour of the US, and was seen (and no doubt admired) by 30 million people!
A few vital statistics:
4-8-4 GS-4 "Northern" type locomotive
110 ft/33.5m long
Top speed 110mph/180kph
