Dovercourt Bay

After driving from Ely this morning, we arrived in Dovercourt to a muddy looking sea. But it didn't matter because we were meeting mum and dad there for some quality catch up time. It wasn't about the weather.

I said something similar on our last visit here but we had some exceptionally good holidays here as kids with nan, aunties, uncles and cousins for, on the whole, lots of sunny days at the beach hut... Crabbing was the biggest pastime and we had great home-made contraptions to catch them in with bacon rind as the lure. We caught some whoppers! I doubt they're like that anymore since they sanded over the rocky beach.  The days typically ended with a crab race which sent them scuttling back to the sea... Nobody seemed too bothered whose won... It was more about screeching in the bedlam of avoiding giant waving claws!

This afternoon, we visited a very special Auntie who we spent most summer holiday hours with alongside Nan who a few years ago. She's still looking great for her age, radiating the same warmth that she always did and in fine humour. We watched the grand national with her and Bill as they'd been out to place their 50p bets this morning. Sadly, there were no winnings for a cruise this year but it looked like all the horses and riders lived to tell the tale (although I have since read that four horses died at other races on the day (it's really not my favourite sport for that very reason and I watched most of the race with my hands clasped tight.))

Tonight we've had a delicious meal and more good conversation at Thai Up At the Quay (loved the name) for part of mum and dad's Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations.

I feel very lucky.
