The Florrie

"The Florrie" is a Victorian Grade 2 listed building in the Dingle, South Liverpool. It was the first purpose built boys club in the UK. I hadn't realised that it was built by Sir Bernard Hall, a city "merchant" in honour of his daughter Florence who had died at the age of 22. It does seem a little strange to build a boys club in memory of a deceased daughter, but anyway, a boys club it was and it duly opened in 1890 and became a Liverpool Institution until it ran out of funds in 1990, closed down and suffered a major fire in 1999. It was subsequently reopened in 2012, after a high profile campaign and significant lottery funding, as a heritage resource centre, providing several venues which are available for hire, and workspaces for businesses.

Next time I must go inside!
