Above Ophir, Central Otago, NZ

Imagine raising your babies in this wee stone hut.
There are many such to be seen in Central Otago , often in old mine settlements where gold was sought. Life was hard in those times and to raise all children born as far as adulthood, never taken for granted.
We took the road up to St Bathan's today and had a picnic beside Blue Lake before following another gravel road up towards the Hawkdun Conservation Area and the Falls Dam(see extra). The dam was very low indeed and the Fiddlers Flat and environs appeared brown and dry to these North Islanders. I cannot discover who the fiddler was…does anyone know?
