St Mary the Virgin Church at Whitby
This 11th Cent. Church perched on a cliff overlooking
the Town stands as a testament to its independent
maritime spirit. The Building is remarkable for its box
pews, triple decker pulpit and Elizabethan communion
table. An absolute treasure which pays the highest
compliment to those who have withstood the
devastating hand of the modernising school.
The Church is still heated in winter by an old black
coke boiler. The shovel was standing alongside and
the black flue pipe can be seen in the photograph.
