Buffalo

This stalactite in Dunmore Cave is - for obvious reasons - known as The Buffalo. Sorry about the phone photo - I don't have a laptop with me so cannot use the 'proper' ones.

In July 1699, the 14 year old George Berkeley explored Dunmore Cave with some school friends. With only candles for light and 17th century clothing and ropes, this must have been quite a feat. Many of the stalactites and stalacmites that Berkeley saw and later described in his famous essay and no longer there, having been removed as souvenirs by less scrupulous tourists. But the buffalo must weight a couple of tons, so it has been saved to an era when we manage acces to all these sites.
