Toad in the road

I almost stood on this toad, who had frozen into total unblinking immobility on the track I was pounding down with thoughts of lunch. It was about 4" long, and managed not to move a muscle while I crouched down to take this photo and a face-on pic. We walked off fairly normally and then turned and waited till we were rewarded with the sight of it making off at an ungainly waddle towards the ditch at the roadside. Until then I'd not really been sure it was alive.

Had it stayed put, I fear it might not have lived for long - Forestry vehicles occasionally batter up here with no thought for toads or walkers!
