St Michael & All Angels at Berwick East Sussex
Berwick Church is a Grade 1 listed building of
great importance on account of its unique 20th
Cent. murals painted during the Second World
War by the Bloomsbury artists, Duncan Grant,
Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell. The Church,
situated on a rise in land, enjoys panoramic views
of the South Downs. The simple well-like early
Saxon font appears to predate the later 12th
Cent. building around it. To the right of the font
on the lower stones of the tower arch can be seen
14th Cent. arrow marks, grooves thought to have
been cut by the sharpening of arrows. Some of
the villagers' ancestors are on the Rolls of Archers at Agincourt.
