Out There

This’ll be a memory for them.
Crouching on the beach together
showing the kid the sea
- perhaps for the first time.

It’s out there somewhere.
Just out of reach. Like the future.
And look at that expanse of beach
(and dunes)stretching out before them

seemingly forever.
But there is no forever.
Not even for people
who are happy.

Although there is this moment
which is passing
and…is… past
and becomes a memory

of an out of season holiday
when they dragged the pushchair
onto the beach
and tried to show

the kid the sea.
Probably
for the first time
but not the last.
