SFMoMA
Jeff standing in the entrance hall at the SF MoMA. I can't remember the name of the artist who designed this but it was so beautiful to look at as you climb the stairs toward the exhibits. We saw Picasso + American Art. It showed the American artists who were inspired by Picasso from Max Weber to Pollack and Jasper Johns. The MoMA placed the American artists next to the Picasso paintings to show the influence and what they gave to American art. I thought it was pretty amazing that they were credited as encorporating a style and method in order to understand painting. They were not labeled as hacks. In advertising, students are so freaked out about copying styles because they don't want to be labeled hacks. I think we give ourselves less time to master a craft and put ridiculous pressure on ourselves to create the next greatest thing. But perhaps it takes time. Perhaps we need to emulate a style in order to find our own. For I do believe most people will truly find their own style. Some find it earlier than others, but we all have different paths to becoming masters of a craft.
