A la lanterne !

"A la lanterne " in late 18th century revolutionary Paris was the slogan that preceded the lynching of officials and aristocrats by the mob.   So emblematic of change did the words become that in a pamphlet by the journalist Camille Desmoulins he has a lamppost say to the people " I"ve always been here, you could have used me all along" !

Contemporary lampposts are now , however, merely the place where posters are hung  (rather than candidates) .  

This  decoration of the streets in Dunoon (and other parts of Argyll & Bute) is now well underway despite an attempt by the Lib Dems (of all people) in Argyll & Bute Council to ban such democratic  displays a couple of years ago.  

So far only the SNP is winning the lamppost war, as it is often called, with a few Lib Dem ones in evidence but nothing at all from Tories or Labour.
