Bailey Adjuster. Leitz Summicron 50mm DR
We visited some of my hand plane collection two days ago. Today's Blip is a close-up of the ingenious Bailey-style overhead adjuster for the cutting iron: You turn the beautiful knurled knob clockwise, the knob descends on the thread, taking the captured cam with it and pushing the iron forward . The plane is Tom Lie-Nielsen's reproduction of the extremely rare Stanley #164 low angle smoothing plane. The originals were offered by Stanley Toolworks from 1926-1943 and are as rare as hens' teeth now. I found prices of $1600- $2800 for clean examples. Lie-Nielsen beefed up the iron casting of the body and the iron which is fully 5mm thick to absorb chatter as the plane cuts.
