Papa Cowbird
He's a handsome devil, but they are not my favorite bird couple to have move in to the neighborhood...
"The Brown-headed Cowbird is a stocky blackbird with a fascinating approach to raising its young. Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. These they lay in the nests of other birds, abandoning their young to foster parents, usually at the expense of at least some of the host’s own chicks. Once confined to the open grasslands of middle North America, cowbirds have surged in numbers and range as humans built towns and cleared woods. " All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Orinithology
He and the wife(quite drab) have been here a few days, so I suspect they
are settling into their egg producing ways.
For the Record,
This day came in sunny and cool. I've just spent some time with our real estate agent at the house next door. It will go on the market with an Open House on Sunday. Fingers crossed that it sells quickly to a family who can restore it lovingly.
One hand sickly, headache and tight cough. I fear pneumonia again, so I am resting this afternoon.
T returned safely later than expected last night due to storms delaying flights coming out of the midwest.
Extra, White-Throated Sparrow.
