Brown Thrasher Singing

He was near the top of this tree (at the Fort River refuge this morning), at least 50 feet up (nearly 20 meters), singing constantly for 5 minutes or more.  Probably  mimicking other birds' songs, as thrashers often do (they're Mimids).   A wonderful recording of a brown thrasher in Virginia is here (with a list of his imitations) on my friend Don Kroodsma's new website Listening to a Continent Sing.  Don is America's top expert on bird song, and the site is simply magnificent--if you have a listen, you'll be hooked :)  I am honored that he used many of my bird photos on the site.

An extra image of a chipmunk (no sound from him).
