an arrow in eaves

In Kyoto, there is a temple, San-Ju-Sangendou, which is famous for 1001 Buddhist image. At the back veranda of this temple, you can find an arrow stuck in the eaves as above. How was this arrow stuck?  Please guess and choose the right answer in the below mentioned.

1)    About 700 years ago, there was a battle in Kyoto. This arrow was stuck at that time.

2)    In the past, this veranda was used as archery field. An archer shot an arrow to reach the end of this veranda. An arrow stuck in the eaves might be the error of a contestant.

3)    About 20 years ago, my grand father secretly shot an arrow.

Dadadadada....( the sound of drum) The right answer is...... 2.  Does your guess prove right?

In the past, in Sanju-Sangendo held the archery competition. The length of this veranda is about 400 feet. The origin of this contest dates back to the 16th century.  The winner was the contestant who successfully shot the largest number of arrows within 24 hours. Wao, what sturdy men they were!!!

Looking this veranda, I imagined the battle field used a bow and arrow.

Honestly speaking, I was scared to imagine being killed by an arrow flown at me from 400 feet away.
