Away visiting this lady

The following is probably an old man rant, a la Victor Meldrew (thank you Mr Gregg for the previous reference)
We drove down to Kent today without trouble. We then drove around a couple of local towns. In these town we found several places where two lanes merged into one. Without exception the car/van in the other lane pushed their way passed us and cut in front of me, despite there being very little room. 
When we come across these merging lanes in Norfolk we take turns to go; if there is some confusion who is to go, a smile and wave solves the problem. I know which I prefer.
