WATER RAIL
Rallus aquaticus. Here's what the RSPB website says: "Difficult to see in the breeding season, it is relatively easier to find in winter, when it is also more numerous and widespread. Although usually secretive they can become confiding but are still far more often heard than seen."
I'm not sure whether this sudden and leisurely appearance under our noses at one of the hides is what they mean by "become confiding" but it caused quite a flurry, and some irritation among those photographers who had enormous lenses because it was too close for them to get good photos. For once my little camera was handier.
Although it looks like I've cut the tail off, it's only millimetres, but this was the best one for showing its enormous feet.
