Ex antiquis et novissimis optima
Hardwick village sign, Cambridgeshire
"The sheep and crook represent the etymology of the name, Heorde-wíc = herd-farm. The overall apple shape is inspired by the village’s connection with fruit growing. Other elements represent ongoing life, faith, the family, a caring community, all the sort of things village signs have to represent. The motto "Ex antiquis et novissimis optima" - The Best from the Old and the Latest - appears to have been borrowed from Fitzwilliam College Cambridge."
