Heading towards the border

On the second day of our tandem tour we left Peebles at 09:45 and arrived at Kielder 8.5 hours later.

The 70-mile journey took us first along the River Tweed (lovely and flat), over the hills that mark the Scottish-English border (challenging), and through the Northumberland National Park (a relief to be almost at our destination).

Apart from a 15 minute period of very light rain it was sunny all the way with no wind - perfect cycling weather. Along the route we encountered a variety of birds and animals including deer, dead badgers, herons, donkeys, a zillion sheep and lambs, and a greyhound that decided that its mission was to accompany us all the way!

We had regular stops to check the map and consume calories, with a break at lunch time for a lovely bowl of soup.

Our evening accommodation is a very welcoming bed and breakfast beside the River South Tyne. Tomorrow we leave here for the last (short) stretch of the trip to Hexham.


Exercise today: 70 miles of tandem riding.
