Backwaters on a raft
Left the extreme serene island that was Philip Kutty?s Homestay and spent our last trip with our Admiral that took us into Allepey to meet our rice boat.
We were both really excited about this ?.but to be honest it was a bit of a disappointment. The boat was OK, but the staff were really apethetic...we were the only two on this boat and we seemed to be an inconvenince to them or something! We have really been spoilt by the lovely, smiling people that we have met everywhere throughout India so this was a bit of a shock to the system.
The icing on the cake was in the evening when it seemed like they kind of set up the living area to be infested by mosquitoes.....we asked them to put the covers down when we put the light on but for some reason they wouldn't. Anyhow - they suggested that we eat in our bedroom which was annoying as that wasn't that nice either.....Oh well!
Anyhow - earlier in the day when we docked, we got off the monsterous boat, and headed on to a three person boat/raft. This was lovely and we paddled very peacefully along some of the very small sections of the backwaters. It amazes me at how much washing goes on here.....everyone seems to be hitting their laundry 'slam dunk' style on their washing stones at the edge of the waters.
Lovely peaceful punctuation to a bit of a disappointing and very overpriced rice boat experience!
