St Cross Church and Hospital, Winchester

This ancient complex and its internal politics probably provided the inspiration for Anthony Trollope's delightful novel "The Warden".

If you want to encounter a time-warp, this is as close as you will ever get to one.  The Hospital is in fact an almshouse, housing a community of 25 elderly men; these "Brothers" will often be seen in their red or black gowns, adorned with a white cross.

St Cross is at the southern end of Winchester, and adjacent to the extensive water meadows of the river Itchen.

Once seen, never forgotten.
