Flower Friday 6

A Mother's Day gift for a special friend, the mother of 10 well adjusted children.

The Friday before U.S. Mother's Day is always opening day for a greenhouse/garden center about an hour from here.  Another friend introduced me to the tradition of going there early on Friday morning to buy tomatoes and other vegetables and other annuals and perennials, herbs and hanging baskets.  The prices are significantly lower than the big box stores and other garden centers in our area.  It's a family run operation for about 100 years (literally) and they're only open a couple of weeks a year, until they sell out.  The tomato plants are about 12" (30.5 cm) tall and come individually in 6" (15.2 cm) pots.  So they have a good head start.  The goal is slice the first tomato by July 4th which we can sometimes accomplish. The only problem is, there is still danger of frost around here so it means they have to be watered in pots, taken in at night and out during the day until about the last weekend in May, depending on when the full moon occurs.  Small price to pay for delicious produce!

Many thanks to BikerBear for hosting.  Sorry I didn't see the "twist" til I was ready to post.  Maybe next week.
