Spitalfields
Had a lovely day.
Mr O. and I drove the boys back to London, and had a meal with them and Lizzy in Spitalfields market. I've never been there before and thought it was a great place, lots of restaurants, market stalls and buzzing with life, and of course the fabulous weather helped...
Spitalfields was founded in 1197 and takes its name from the hospital and priory, St. Mary's Spittel. The market was founded in a field next to the priory in the thirteenth century.
Spitalfields had been relatively rural, until the Great Fire of London, after which King Charles II granted John Balch a Royal Charter that gave him the right to hold a market on Thursdays and Saturdays in or near Spital Square.
