Continuing on the theme of the Boswell Book Festival, we chose to visit Auchinleck House which was Boswell's Scottish home. The estate had been in the family for hundreds of years but the current house was built by his father.
It is no longer owned by the Boswell's but by The Landmark Trust so you can hire the place and stay there. However, it is not open to the public so having four tours over the weekend was a must, especially in the company of Enlightenment expert and Boswell scholar Dr William Zachs whose extraordinary knowledge was matched by his enthusiasm and communication skills.
The library was the scene of the famous argument between Boswell's father and Dr Johnson after Boswell and Johnson had returned from their Hebridean journey. How amazing to be standing there and being read Boswell's own words on the argument by Dr Zachs.
On top of that we had good weather. There's a rarity.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
