Chontacuro
We ate grubs this afternoon in Archidona! They were cooked up in a little palm leaf and steamed over a carbon fire. I thought they'd be tastier. Turns out that these little critters are bred in the tippy tops of palms? And that their harvest is endangering some important palm species. Chontapambil (a super strong, black colored wood often made into spears and blowguns) is a culturally important palm for indigenous peoples of the Amazonian basin. And its population is fast on the decline.
