Spotting A Damien, London
Went to see the Deustche Borse Prize exhibition at the Photographers' Gallery and was distinctly underwhelmed. I thought it was poorly presented and some of the entires seemed to be more about the ideas behind the images rather the actual images themselves.
One of the shortlisted entries was about the photographer's father and his passion for restoring classic cars - they even had a beautifully restored car in the gallery itself! Unfortunately, the photographs themselves were actually quite boring and, to me, did not convey the emotion behind the project and why some of them had to be placed on the floor I've no idea.
The best shots in the whole exhibition were about the Arab Spring and, specifically, Egypt. Unfortunately, they were projected on screens in a darkened room, changing every few seconds, which I felt was a missed opportunity to study them properly and engage more with the subject matter. Every year I've had a firm favourite and every year my least favourite has won!
I just find the Photographers' Gallery a bit antiseptic, a bit too much about intellectualising photography rather than celebrating it's power to move and a passion for an arresting image - after all it is a visual medium, but then maybe it's just me! I often come out of the gallery feeling disappointed, confused and sometimes angry.
Today's shot is of a pillar a few yards from the gallery's entrance - it just made me smile but also reminded me of one of Damien Hirst's spot paintings (maybe one that's falling apart and been graffitied by a small child!).
