Jackdaw (Corvus monedula)
I saw a small flock of maybe 10 jackdaws working their way across a patch of grass by the library in town. They didn’t seem even slightly nervous about a human lurking nearby with a camera (me).
It all went well until their wandering took them closer to a tree where thrushes were nesting and suddenly a furious thrush dived on them.
Later in the day, as I was going home, I saw two of them engaged in an arial duel with a seagull. The three birds turned tightly, diving and climbing, twisting through and around the tree tops. It wasn’t at all clear who was attacking who and in the end I really wondered if the jackdaws were irritating the seagull just for fun.
