The Gap

At last, after being closed since the flood damage in December the A591 was re-opened today.
Heading back from Lancaster this evening I decided to drive through the Lakes and cross 'the Gap' where the road had collapsed cutting the north and south lakes off from one another for the last 6 months.
The road closure has had a huge impact on many people but like so many things the effects can be unexpected and so much more subtle and complex than is at first apparent. I have felt it as a severing, a sense of being cut off from places of strong connection. And yet, the solitude and silence that came as a result, and the effort of getting there also created a different sort of relationship which won't be achieved again. Another unexpected layer ....
