The Dun Cow...
We were back in Durham today to finally collect my new car (long story). Wooo-oooo!!!! The weather wasn't as good but still very pleasant. Took a stroll over Bath's Bridge and along the old racecourse path. Saw this piece of 'art' along the way. The story goes that a milkmaid with her cow helped direct St Cuthbert's remains to Durham (Dunholme/Dunelme) and at the cathedral was built upon that spot. Whatever, this unattractive piece of sculpture is on the river bank by the old (gone) Elvet Station and opposite the cricket pitches. It's surrounded by some more 'art' in the shape of broken cogs.
I don't even try to understand this stuff, I don't care for it but each to his own. On a plaque in the ground is a slab with this 'clever'? inscription…
DURHAM COW / LEGEND WOULD HAVE YOU RUMINATING UP BY THOSE / MASSIVE PILES BUT WHAT COW PREFERS A ROCKY MOUND / TO A RIVER BANK AND WHO BELIEVES THAT STORY OF A / DREAM AN OX TWO MILKMAIDS SOME FOOTSORE MONKS AND A HAPHAZZARD ENCOUNTER THAT PUT STOP TO THEIR ENDLESS ZIGZAGGING AND SEED A BUILDING BEYOND ALL THEIR COLOSSAL IMAGINING. HERE AND NOW YOU SEEM REAL ENOUGH / Andrew Burton 1997
In other news, Specsavers at Seaham have lost my order for new glasses placed with them over 3 weeks ago. Fortunately their supplier took payment for them at the time so they are not over duly concerned but make all the right noises.
