WWII coastal defence
East Lothian abounds with relics of WWII. Its large coastal area was thought to be vulnerable to attack by German forces. The remains of anti-glider poles can be seen at low tide in estuaries and lines of large cement blocks are all over the coastline. There are also anti-tank road blocks (eg at Tyningham), as well as many other now long forgotten remains of armaments that the local defence would have used (though none was probably up to much). There are many old WWII nissan huts around the countryside where there were airforce bases. If you are interested in military history(as my husband is) there is a lot of research that can be done in relation to all of this.
The dunes around Aberlady have a lot of these blocks, but these particular ones are at the end of the Aberlady mile towards the gates of Gosford.
