The city of permanent shade
I love manchester. I dont even mind that the much publicised 'winter snow slide' in piccadilly Gardens has turned out to be white astroturf on a slope, at least they thought it would be fun to try it. The city has a real optimism and vision.
What it increasingly doesn't have however is sunlight. The streets were built flanked by graceful stone buildings of 4, 5 or even 6 storeys. They are increasingly being pulled down and replaced by faceless tall glass buildings, in this case 14 storeys.
There are now streets that get no direct sunlight at street level, even more so in the winter with the low sun.
I think thats why i need to get up into the hills at weekends, to feel the sun & see a distant horizon.
