Revisiting St John the Hermit
I was captivated by this religious site above Spilia last year and I'm sure I blipped the story of St John at the time, though the patchy WiFi here discourages me from checking or linking just now. I shall return to do so ... perhaps.
This was taken on the approach to the cave church on a perfect morning of sun and a breeze. There were only five of us, so the silence and the birdsong performed a powerful part in the atmosphere of the place. By now I also realised that the caves were a place of refuge during the Battle of Crete in WW2, so doubly important to the local people.
I love icons, I love the sunshine. I love Crete.
