Periodic Cicada
This is the year of the 17 yr locusts in our area. They've only just begun to emerge from their long pupa stage to turn into loud, innumerable adults. The recent cool, wet weather has slowed the wave that is to come but once we have a few warm days the air will be full of the insects and their noise.
The one in the picture has just come out of the dirt and attached itself to the little flag. The whitish adult has worked itself out of it's old skin and the new wings have not yet unfolded. This is the point when the bug is most vulnerable to predators.
