Moulin du Grand Poulguin, Pont-Aven
Backblipped 24.07.12
So hot today - 28 - 30 degrees and sun, sun, sun!
After another lazy day David and I headed off to Pont-Aven early evening to have a wander round the art galleries and have dinner. We didn't linger in the galleries long due to intense heat inside and the fact the cheapest canvas we saw was about 4000 euros! For the serious collector then!
Chose the Moulin du Grand Poulguin as the place for dinner. It's an old water mill and I am almost certain it's the one that features in the well known painting Water Mill at Pont-Aven by Paul Gauguin.
We sat under the left-hand umberella and enjoyed goats cheese on french bread with salad and mustard dressing. D then had scallops in cognac sauce with boiled potatoes and french beans and I had sirloin steak with sauce bernaise, french fries and french beans. It was absolutely delicious!
Only space for ice cream to finish but caused utter confusion by ordering a scoop of pistachio flavoured ice cream and a scoop of Irish cream ice cream and ended up with an Irish coffee (as well as our two lattes!) When I tried to explain, the waitress thought I wanted a scoop of ice cream IN my coffee! The conversational French class I did seems so worthwhile now!
Another waitress arrived to try and help and explained that they didn't do Irish Cream ice cream despite it being on the menu! and started rhyming off all the other flavours of ice cream she had that contained alcohol - rum & raison, calvados, cidre....in the meantime a third waitress appeared with my dessert - one scoop of pistachio ice cream and one of Irish Cream ice cream!!! Sufffice to say it all ended in confused looks then much laughter! And David very thankful that he'd settled for vanilla!
An evening stroll back to the car along the river looking at all the little boats and the grand houses was really lovely as the temp had dropped to a more pleasant 22 degrees. Pont-Aven really is a beautiful little place. Easy to see how artists have been drawn here for so many years.
And get this....I drove back to the holiday house! So what you might sayy bit this is a BIG DEAL for me as in all the years we have been coming to France I have never been brave enough to drive over here. Daft I know but there you go. :-)))
G&T on the decking with the rest of our holiday party when we got back was the perfect end to the day.
I don't want this holiday to end!!
:))
