Large Red Damselfly
We started today with a walk from our boat. We hoped to take in the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Upton Broad and Marshes Nature Reserve, but we didn't know where the entrance was; happily we came upon it by chance. It was a super place to wander round with a camera and binoculars. We were fortunate to see a Reed Bunting and a Lapwing but they were too far away to get good photos. However this Large Red Damselfly stood still on a leaf long enough for a photo.
On the way back to the boatyard at Stalham (where we have to hand the boat back tomorrow morning) we stopped off at the 14th Century St Benet's Abbey - once one of the richest abbeys in England. It escaped the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII when he united the Abbey with the Bishopric of Norwich. Part of the gatehouse still survives and can be seen in the first extra. However in the 18th Century a windmill was built on the site, using part of the gatehouse wall for part of its wall!
The second extra is another amusing sign we came across in Stalham. This must be the shortest cycle track in existence!
Thanks ever so much to those who gave stars and/or hearts for my Grebe Chick blip yesterday, which propelled it to Page 4 of "Popular" - I'm most grateful :-)
