Historic Tenterfield

Our return trip to Narrabri from Byron Bay included two very interesting stop overs, the first being the historic town of Tenterfield, "Birth Place of the Australian Nation".
It was in Tenterfield that Sir Henry Parkes delivered his famous Federation speech at the Tenterfield School of Arts on 24th October 1889.
The picture above is of the original hall in which the speech was delivered, and is now a Museum to Federation. The flag in the centre of the back wall is the Australian Federation Flag, and dates to 1831, and was the first attempt to represent the Australian nation. Over the next seventy years, it was very popular on the east coast of Australia and in the 1880s and 1890s it was adopted by groups advocating for federation. The flag was never officially adopted.

Our second interesting stop over was in Glen Innes, site of the unique Australian Standing Stones
