The alley ways and twittens of Deal
I love the cobbled, little back streets of Deal with their fisherman's cottages and names which give you some idea of a what the street might have been used or was known for. Most of the cottages have now been 'done up' and are owned by Londoners but have still retained their charm.
The town was renowned for its smuggling activities at one time (France bring close by) and it is is said that all the cottages were inter-connected by tunnels so that if the customs man came a'calling people/goods could be moved from one place to another.
