1000 years ago
Hiking near the Rio Grande on the Big Arsenic Springs trail north of Taos, there are petroglyphs carved by the Pueblo Indians nearly 1000 years ago. There are also crosses and other symbols left by Spanish explorers around 1600. The hike is a mile down a beautiful trail lined with ponderosa pine, and then of course one has to hike back up a mile! Begins at 7500 feet and descends 700 feet to the Rio Grande.
