Strange little fruit

These seem to be popular in Kaunas so we decided to try some. I don't know what they are called but they are the most rancid fruit I have ever had the displeasure to try. They look like a pine cone/ lychee, they smell like sour milk and they taste awful. Does anyone know what they are and what they are used for?
