Let 100 flowers bloom

Sculpture in the open air at YSP by Swiss artist Not Vital.

We were moved by this striking installation, inspired by - and challenging - a campaign by Mao Zedong in 1956 China, that resulted in severe retribution for people who spoke out. These closed lotus flowers are a metaphor for the repression of free speech and the people who have never had an opportunity to flourish.
