Venta Silurium
Venta Silurium is the Roman word for what is now known as Caerwent (translates as Fort of Gwent) It is situated five miles west of Chepstow and eleven miles east of Newport (South Wales). It was founded by the Romans in AD 75 as a market town for the defeated Silures tribe, and is easily the most impressive town defence to survive in Britain and the most perfectly preserved in Northern Europe.
It appears to have remained in use to the 9th Century and covers a site of 44 acres. It was one of the most important towns in Britain at one time, alongside the likes of York, Chester, London. In the Blip picture you can clearly see the surving town walls. On the horizon you can make out The Severn Bridge showing the proximity to the sea which would have been used for transporting.
