Escalating

Here is the story so far. Tenants move out, we go in and assess the damage: house not clean, to be expected; walls need a lick of paint, doable; window keys missing, inconvenient. How did we get from changing the lino in the kitchen to redesigning units, knocking down the shower and sink in the bathroom, sanding/ varnishing all upstairs floors and rewiring the electrics?
