Yum, Yum!

Dear Diary,

It isn't summer until the little ice cream shop at the end of my road is open.  It use to be the post office for the village of South Hiram back in the day.  Now, it serves delicious Maine-made ice cream and I thought I would show you my favorite flavors.  This is a sweet and delicious memory!

I have to admit, I have a particular weakness for ice cream.  I use to make it myself in an old hand cranked device.  There really isn't anything like home-made strawberry ice cream with berries you just picked.  When anyone visits I am sure to take them down the road for a cone.  I just get the baby size cone for a dollar.

When I was a teenager I worked for Filmore's Ice Cream stand in my town one summer.  Very tempting work and I think I gained 10 pounds that summer!  The beginning of a life-long passion for the creamy stuff I'm afraid.

I worked every summer from the time I was 14 years old.  I had to get a special work permit then and I worked in a factory in Gleasondale making 85 cents an hour in 1963.  Of course, back then you could buy a hamburger, French fries and a Coke for less than a dollar.

I would work in a Dennison Manufacturing plant another summer…horribly hot and boring job…I would later, much later, learn that I am descended from the Denison family.  Small world.

I think it is good for kids to work.  It teaches them how to budget their money.  I mainly wanted to save up for back-to-school clothes.  Having a few new outfits to start school was important to a teenage girl in the 1960’s.  Now, I don’t give a hoot for clothes.  As long as they are comfortable and clean it works for me.
