Queen wrangler
A lot of people in Blackheath are as busy as anything organising the 60th Rhododendron Festival, which will be upon us before we know it.
Larraine has been chasing down as many of the past 59 Festival Queens/Princesses as she can find, to appear on the leading float in the parade. A former queen herself, she's very familiar with the traditions of 1950s parade float decoration and has been organising sessions for the making of the thousands of paper flowers that will cover the floats and decorate the several halls that will be used for the crowning of this year's princess, the pre-festival Queens' Dinner Dance and the Festival Debutante Ball.
Tonight there was a very well-attended committee meeting and Larraine brought along one of the many umbrellas she's working on as part of the decor.
(Despite there being more than 20 people at the meeting, each with a report to give, a request to make or something to discuss, everything was dealt with in less than an hour and a half - and with good humour and enthusiasm. It's a pretty good committee and there's nothing like a really good chairperson for whipping through the business. Then we went to the pub...)
